A well-known builder from Navi Mumbai, Gurunath Chinchkar, died by suicide at his home on Friday morning, citing alleged harassment by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a drug case filed against his son.

Last week, the Mumbai Police seized drugs worth crores of rupees and issued a warrant for the arrest of Chinchkar’s elder son, Naveen, while a separate arrest warrant was issued for his younger son, Dheeraj.

Chinchkar claimed that Naveen had not been living with the family and had no involvement in the matter. The suicide note mentioned that despite repeated requests to be left alone, the police continued to harass them.

According to the police, Chinchkar shot himself at his residence on April 25. A 9mm pistol, along with the suicide note, was recovered from the scene.

Naveen had become entangled in drug smuggling while studying psychology abroad, a matter that Chinchkar was allegedly unaware of at the time.

Chinchkar claimed to have severed ties with his son five years ago after Naveen was caught in a drug smuggling case and subsequently left India. Naveen reportedly has residences in multiple countries.

Gurunath Chinchkar had moved to Mumbai from Konkan at a young age. He worked as a loader for the Port Trust for 30 years before starting his own business in his wife’s name. Over time, he built a reputation as a successful builder.
