There are always new games to be played, but if you aren’t keen on spending money, you may wonder which game to invest in. After all, rising costs are everywhere, and the gaming industry looks as unpredictable as ever in 2025 — you’ll want to ensure you pick a game that satisfies you. But what if we told you that you don’t need to spend money to play games? Thanks to the Epic Games Store, you can download a free game (sometimes two, or three if you’re lucky) and keep it forever. It’s a brilliant way to discover and play new titles without spending your money on something you might not like.
How did the Epic Games store come to be? It all started with the success of Fortnite, which quickly became a game recognized as having a significant influence on pop culture. It also thrust Epic Games into prominence, which gave the studio the success it needed to launch its storefront in 2019. It provided — and continues to provide — various games to attract players. It’s a move that made it a direct competitor against Valve’s storefront, Steam.
We do, however, have some sad news for console gamers. The Epic Games Store is exclusively for PC users, so you won’t be able to access its free games on consoles like the PS5 or Xbox. If you have a PC or laptop, now is the perfect time to dive into the Epic Games Store and take advantage of the incredible discounts and deals available. Setting up an Epic Games account is free, and you’ll unlock numerous rewards.
What is the new free game on the Epic Games Store this week? (April 24 to May 1)
Albion Online (Free Welcome Gift)
If you enjoy your sandbox adventure games with a huge heaping of MMO goodness, you’ll want to pay attention to Sandbox Interactive’s Albion Online.
While not as visually appealing as most other modern MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online, Albion Online makes up for it by being free-to-play and prioritizing community updates to make players feel like there’s plenty to do, while also encouraging exploration. And, if you love your Arthurian mythology, we’re sure you’ll find something to love in the game’s many quests and NPCs.
Being free-to-play, you can start Albion Online right now. However, the welcome gift pack that Sandbox Interactive is giving away will only be available until next week — so make sure you redeem it as soon as possible.
The welcome gift pack contains the following rewards:
- Knight Adventurer Vanity Bundle
- Mistbison Mount Skin
- 3 Days Premium
- 250 Learning Points
- 350 Community Tokens
- 10 Adept’s Focus Restoration Potions
- 10 Adept’s Tomes of Insight (worth a total of 100,000 Fame)
You’ll have the chance to grab all of these free rewards from April 24 until May 1. So don’t take too long to decide before jumping in, otherwise you might miss out.
Albion Online is available now via the Epic Games Store. Albion Online is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online game that is well-regarded, with an OpenCritic rating of Strong and an average critic review score of 79.
CHUCHEL
If you enjoy Botanicula, you’ll be pleased to know that Amanita Design’s 2018 adventure puzzle game CHUCHEL is also free on the Epic Games Store. And yes, it boasts the same quirky humor and fun-loving designs that makes Amanita Design’s games stand out.
This time around players will be stepping into the rather hairy shoes of titular protagonist, Chuchel. Chuchel is well known for his loud personality as well as his rivalry with Kekel. Together, the two are neck-and-neck in their competition to retrieve the precious cherry. But it isn’t as simple as fetching it: They’ll have to partake in numerous puzzles and challenges along the way, with levels inspired by a variety of classic video games we all know and love.
Czech band DVA, which has curated the original soundtrack for many Amanita Design games, returns with a vibrant vibe that shows CHUCHEL’s humor and the whimsical adventure players will be on throughout the game.
CHUCHEL is available via the Epic Games Store. CHUCHEL is an indie, adventure-puzzle game with an OpenCritic rating of Strong and an average critic score of 80. Reviewers mention their love for the game’s point-and-click mechanics and funny characters.
What will be free on the Epic Games Store next week? (May 1 to May 8)
Super Space Club
If you enjoy lo-fi as much as your sci-fi, you’ll probably enjoy your time with Super Space Club. An indie game from a single developer, this arcade gunner combines vibrant aesthetics with the calming, soothing relaxation audio from Missouri-based audio duo Fat Bard. The soundtrack also features a variety of vocal artists from around the globe.
Strapped into their ship, players will need to complete challenges and take on galactic foes in order to complete levels. Better yet, players can choose which character they use, with five characters overall. Each has their own unique skills and features.
While not a hugely popular game compared to big AAA games, gamers who appreciate their music, shoot-em-up bullet-hells will find plenty to enjoy in Super Space Club.
Super Space Club is available via the Epic Games Store. It’s an indie space arcade game with a rating that isn’t available on the Epic Games Store but has an overall Positive ranking on the Steam storefront.
