Bob Blackman, an MP (Member of Parliament) from UK (United Kingdom) recently demanded an apology from the British government for the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that happened during the British rule in India in 1919. Co-incidentally, earlier this month, filmmaker Ram Madhvani’s web show The Waking of a Nation released on Sony LIV. It’s based on the aftermath of the massacre.
The Waking of a Nation maker Ram Madhvani on Bob Blackman’s appeal to the UK to apologize to India for Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, “A formal apology is about actively participating in the healing process”
Madhvani has reacted on Blackman’s appeal. He said in a statement, “The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was an act of unspeakable horror, a stain on history that continues to resonate across generations. Bringing this event to screen with The Waking of a Nation was an incredibly difficult process, demanding immense sensitivity to honor the lives lost. UK Conservative MP for Harrow East, Bob Blackman, has rightly demanded a formal apology from the UK government on the anniversary of this horrific event. Yet, year after year, this debate is raised, and year after year, we see no movement.”
The filmmaker added that even after more than 100 years, an apology will help in heal old wounds. “A formal apology from the British government, even after a century, is not just about acknowledging the past; it’s about actively participating in the healing process for the generations that remain affected. Too many lives were brutally extinguished, too many families irrevocably broken. A billion plus Indians still seek this long-overdue acknowledgement. It is never too late to do what is right. For India, for humanity, now is the time for that apology,” said Madhvani.
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama earlier this month, Madhvani recalled that the 12 British actors in his show were not aware about the massacre and were horrified after knowing about it.
The Waking of a Nation starred Taaruk Raina in the lead character of lawyer Kantilal Sahni, who takes on the British empire in court after the horrific massacre. The show also starred Nikita Dutta, Sahil Mehta and Bhawsheel Singh Sahni in pivotal roles.
