The Bombay High Court has granted interim protection from arrest to Prithviraj Patil, the grandson of former Governor of Bihar and West Bengal DY Patil, in a rape case.

Prithviraj Patil, who is also a nephew of former Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Satej Patil, had approached the High Court with anticipatory bail after his plea was rejected in the Thane Sessions Court earlier this month.

Additional Public Prosecutor Ajay S Patil, representing the police, argued that the survivor must be heard in Prithviraj Patil’s plea and should therefore be added as a party respondent. Senior advocate Ashok Mundargi, appearing for Patil, also sought permission to include the survivor as a respondent in the petition.

The bench of Justice Rajesh Patil granted the request but cautioned that if the amendment was not made immediately, the anticipatory bail application would be dismissed without further reference to the Court.

The notice will be served to the victim through the investigating agency.

The court also directed Prithviraj Patil to appear before the investigating officer for questioning on April 16 and 17.

Patil has been accused of repeatedly raping a 29-year-old student under the false promise of marriage. According to the complaint filed in Thane, the woman met Patil at a mall in January 2023, and they subsequently developed a relationship.

Patil, however, claimed that he was falsely implicated as part of a honey trap scheme. He alleged that the informant had a history of filing similar complaints against prominent individuals.

His advocate further argued that Patil had never visited Thane, was married, and had no prior criminal record. It was also claimed that the woman had extorted a significant amount of money from him over time.

The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for April 21.
