Bill Gates recently tried out a new pesticide sprayer developed by an Indian startup, providing a more efficient and convenient option for farmers.
The sprayer was developed by Yogesh Gawande, a local engineer from Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Gawande began his company in 2019 to produce the product and enhance the spraying process for farmers.
Gawande explained that he initially designed the sprayer while pursuing his engineering course. “I first made the sprayer as part of a project during my engineering course,” Gawande stated at a press meet organized by the Marathwada Accelerator for Growth and Incubation Council (MAGIC) office on Wednesday.
The sprayer enables farmers to spray four rows of crops simultaneously without having to support heavy chemical tanks on their backs. The sprayer is, instead, wheel-supported, which is easier and safer to use.
Bill Gates tested the sprayer at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi on March 17, with Gawande present.
“I had earlier tried to sell this sprayer on a highway near Chittepimpalgaon (Gawande’s native village) at Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Subsequently, I dropped the idea to manufacture it further because though the product was applauded, it could not be converted into a business,” he said.
The innovative solution of Gawande is intended to make farming more comfortable and efficient for farmers. The fact that Bill Gates himself used the device personally indicates its potential to enhance agricultural practice.
