Karan Johar, Gippy Grewal, Nimrat Khaira, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Apoorva Mehta and others launched the trailer of their film Akaal. The film is significant as it is Dharma Productions’ first Punjabi film. Karan Johar spoke about it and also his Punjabi roots.
Akaal trailer launch: Karan Johar reveals Akshay Kumar’s clever trick: “When Akshay doesn’t want Apoorva Mehta to know what he’s saying, he talks to me in Punjabi”
Karan Johar began by saying, “There was a time when everyone in the industry was Punjabi. Whether it’s a Manmohan Desai set or Yash Chopra set or J Om Prakash set, everyone used to communicate in Punjabi. While the heroes and filmmakers were Punjabis, the heroines were from down South! Yeh ek kism ka template tha.”
He then spoke about his father Yash Johar. He said, “Every morning, my father would speak in Punjabi with producers and distributors. But when my mother (Hiroo Johar) would wake up, she would call and talk to her relatives in Sindhi! That used to confuse me.”
He then revealed, “I can completely understand Punjabi. Even today, when Apoorva Mehta is the main negotiator and Akshay Kumar doesn’t want Apoorva to know what he wants to say, he talks to me in Punjabi (laughs)!”
As expected, Karan Johar was asked about his recent film Nadaaniyan and the criticism it has faced from the audience and critics alike.
Karan Johar began by saying, “I’d only like to quote a song line, ‘Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna. Choda bekaar ki baatein. Kahin beet na jaaye raina’!”
He continued, “I salute critics. I respect them and everyone knows this. I am a rare filmmaker who has attended the Critics’ Awards. But there are times when I read certain things and I wonder, ‘Woh kisi ka beta hai, woh kisi ki beti hai’. One critic wrote, ‘I want to kick this film’! I have a problem with those who write such stuff. I don’t have a problem with trolls, opinion makers and social commentary. It’s your right and I accept it. Hamari bhi nadaaniyan hai aur gustakhiyan hai. Toh kabhi gehraiyaan hai! But when you write (nasty) stuff, it is a reflection on you. It is not a reflection of the film. It is disturbing. Nobody wants to get kicked because kicking is violence. When you are not allowed violence in the real world, you should be condemned for being violent through your words as well.”
Akaal releases in cinemas on April 10, 2025.
