The metal world has lost a truly singular voice. Sindre Nedland, longtime vocalist of In Vain, has passed away after a battle with cancer. His bandmates, who spent more than two decades by his side, have shared their heartbreak in a tribute that captures the depth of his impact — both musically and personally.
“Sindre‘s voice was unique — it had an ethereal, almost heavenly quality that became one of our trademarks,” they wrote. “When you heard his voice, it was instantly recognizable and, in our opinion, it was one of metal’s finest and most distinctive voices.”
Nedland‘s journey with In Vain began in 2003 when founding members Andreas Frigstad and Johnar Håland sought a clean vocalist to complement their sound. He was more than up to the task. Over time, his role in the band evolved, and with the release of Ænigma, he revealed yet another layer of his talent: powerful growls that further solidified his range.
His bandmates recall him as a gifted musician with an impeccable ear. “Sindre had a strong musical intuition — when he said something would work, it invariably did. He possessed not only an incredible voice but also a keen musical ear, and it always felt safe to trust his judgment.”
Offstage, Nedland was known for his infectious energy and humor, bringing laughter to rehearsals, tours, and post-show celebrations. “Anyone who knew Sindre will remember his positive energy and good humour. After a concert, he was particularly fond of singing old ’90s hits while enjoying a beer or two.”
His battle with cancer was a fight he had waged before. He had previously overcome the disease, channeling his experience into a deeply personal track in their most recent album Solemn, entitled “Season of Unrest.” When the cancer returned last year, his bandmates and fans hoped for another victory. But this time, the fight was one he could not win.
His final performance with In Vain took place at Karmøygeddon Festival in May 2024, a show that will forever be etched in the memories of those who witnessed it. “He was at his absolute best, delivering a show that we will cherish forever.”
Beyond his immense talent, Nedland is remembered by his bandmates, and those who knew him personally, as simply a good person — someone who brought light to those around him. He leaves behind his wife, Tine, and their two children, who are in the thoughts of the many who loved him.
