Harrison Ford, a Hollywood icon with an illustrious career spanning decade, has played many formidable roles—including that of the President of the United States in Air Force One (1997). Now, Ford steps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, a role previously portrayed by the late William Hurt. But unlike his past presidential portrayal, this time Ford’s character undergoes a transformation of a much more monstrous kind—becoming the Red Hulk.
Harrison Ford on playing red hulk in Captain America: Brave New World and his potential evolution; says, “We have the capacity to shift shape”
At a recent press conference for the film, Ford shared his thoughts on stepping into the MCU and experiencing the physicality and grandeur of superhero storytelling. When asked about playing a character who “hulks out” on screen, he expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity:
“Well, I hope he can come back. I hope the story in which he can develop into something other than the Red Hulk. I think we have the capacity to shift shape between Hulkness and humanity, but that’s really not my department. I was very happy with the opportunity to play in this playground. What an amazing group of people to work with, and what an imaginative reality. So I was looking forward to having a piece of the action.”
Ford also acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor, William Hurt, who portrayed Thunderbolt Ross in multiple MCU films, including The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Black Widow (2021). Stepping into such an established character was both an honour and a challenge for Ford, who brought his own take to the role while respecting its legacy:
“I think the character was a great fit for me. I was honoured to be able to do my work on top of a foundation that a wonderful actor, Bill Hurt, provided for the character. And the story is a wonderful extension of the stories that Thunderbolt Ross has been part of.”
Though Marvel remains notoriously secretive about future storylines, Ford’s comments hint at the potential evolution of Thunderbolt Ross and Red Hulk beyond Brave New World. Given the character’s rich history in the comics—where Ross oscillates between his human and Hulk forms—fans are eager to see how his arc unfolds in the MCU.
Ford admitted he had long admired the Marvel universe and its ability to attract top-tier talent. Watching some of his favourite actors have fun with their roles ultimately played a role in his decision to join the franchise:
“I watched Marvel movies, and seeing actors I really liked, really admired, have a great time, and I thought, hey, I want me some of that.”
With Captain America: Brave New World set to be a major addition to the MCU, Ford’s portrayal of Thunderbolt Ross—and his Red Hulk transformation—adds an exciting new dynamic. While it remains to be seen if Red Hulk will return in future films, Ford’s enthusiasm for the role suggests he wouldn’t mind another round in Marvel’s superhero sandbox.
