In a first, a man was arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal for begging near a traffic signal under the Madhya Pradesh Begging Prevention Act.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Zone 2 Sanjay Agarwal told India Today TV that a person registered a complaint at the MP Nagar police station against the beggar, who was allegedly seeking alms from him at the Board Office signal in the city.

The complainant said that when he asked the man who was seeking alms, why he was begging and suggested that he could do some other work. However, the man said that he survived solely by seeking alms and didn’t know any other way of earning, following which he filed the complaint.

The police registered a case against the beggar under the Madhya Pradesh Begging Prevention Act, and he was arrested.

Agarwal said that they received complaints that people “who don’t look like beggars” come and seek alms from them at major traffic signals in the city and the police is cracking down on such cases.
