G5A Cinema House has organized a retrospective of Mani Ratnam’s films in Mumbai from January 24 to 26. The three-day event will feature screenings of some of the most acclaimed films of the legendary filmmaker along with discussions on the same with people he has collaborated with over the decades.
EXCLUSIVE: Nikkhil Advani on Mani Ratnam Retrospective by G5A, “It will be through the eyes of his prodigies like Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Madhavan”
Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani is on the advisory board of G5A. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, he shared more insights on the retrospective saying, “The retrospective is through the eyes of his cinematographers, like Santosh Sivan, Ravi K Chandan, Rajesh Menon, Ravi Verman and his prodigy of assistants who have now become big names, like Shaad Ali, Bejoy Nambiar, Vijay Krishna Acharya, Abhishek Bachchan, Revathi, Madhavan, Manisha Koirala, Aishwarya Rai Bachchcan, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, etc. All of them would be joining either in person or online. We will be able to interact with them. And most importantly, Mani Ratnam will be there.”
When asked his favourite Mani Ratnam films, Advani said, “One of my favourite films of his is Kannathil Muthamittal. It’s a beautiful film, which really moved me. But, of course, whether it’s Iruvar, Nayakan or Thalapathi, all have created a big mark on contemporary filmmakers. After Nayakan, we will have people like Vasan Bala, Lijo Jose Pellissery and Gautham Menon, who are incredible filmmakers in their own right, talk about how Nayakan shaped their storytelling style and narrative.”
G5A Cinema House organizes screenings of acclaimed films every month with one retrospective in January. In last January, they had a retrospective of the late Irrfan Khan’s films. The place also provides space for smaller, independent films. “Once every month, we also show films by young indie filmmakers,” said Advani. “The kind of films that are finding it difficult to find a voice. We showed films like Joyland, All That Breathes, While You Were Sleeping, etc. That’s what Cinema House in G5A does. It’s an incredible place. Over there, you can change the seating depending on the performance. There’s theatre, dance, jazz, DJ playing for the night, classical music, etc.”
Advani added, “The most important thing we do at the Cinema House after the screening is that the audience gets to participate in a panel discussion along with the filmmaker, actors, etc. During Irrfan Khan retrospective, we had Konkona Sen Sharma, Neeraj Kabi, Mira Nair, Asif Kapadia, Ritesh Batra, Nimrit Kaur and Tigmanshu Dhulia. We had Rekha Bhardwaj singing Irrfan Khan’s favourite songs.”
