The chief operating officer of BookMyShow parent Big Tree Entertainment, Anil Makhija, appeared before the Mumbai Police‘s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Monday over a petition alleging irregularities in the sale of tickets for British band Coldplay‘s upcoming India tour.

The Mumbai Police are making a preliminary enquiry after a city-based lawyer lodged a complaint with the EOW against the event’s ticketing agent BookMyShow, organiser Live Nation Entertainment and their top management, accusing them of using ticket bots to manipulate the ticketing process.

Ordinarily, an FIR is registered if a preliminary enquiry concludes a cognisance offence. Otherwise, it is closed for want of actionable evidence.

The website of BookMyShow crashed briefly on September 22, soon after the sale of tickets for the highly anticipated concert went live, triggering widespread complaints against the ticketing platform. BookMyShow issued a statement denying any involvement in ticket scalping or manipulation. The platform also said it filed a complaint against black marketing of the tickets for the January shows.

“With 13 million fans eager to get tickets and logged in, emotions ran high on September 22nd on BookMyShow for Coldplay’s tour in India. We worked hard to ensure every fan had a fair chance to secure tickets, capping it at four per user across all shows,” a spokesperson for the platform said on Monday.
