The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first country in the world to announce that it will use artificial intelligence (AI) to help write and update its laws.

The UAE government has set up a new office called the Office of Regulatory Intelligence. This office will look after how AI is used to create new laws and improve old ones.

Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, “This new legislative system, powered by artificial intelligence, will change the way laws are created, making the process faster and more accurate.”

According to state media, the UAE will build a large database of federal and local laws, court rulings, and government services. Sheikh Mohammed explained that AI would “regularly suggest updates to our legislation”, making it easier for the government to keep laws up to date.

Officials believe AI can make the lawmaking process up to 70 percent faster. It will also help save money because the government won’t have to rely so much on expensive legal firms. AI is expected to predict needed changes early, helping the government respond more quickly.

However, some experts are worried. They say using AI in law could bring serious problems. They fear AI might not understand laws like humans do, and there could be mistakes or ethical issues in how AI handles important decisions.
