EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh on The Diplomat, “Why are you keeping an English title? Is there a shortage of Hindi titles?” : Bollywood News – Bollywood Hungama

The first quarter of 2025 hasn’t been great for mainstream Hindi cinema, both in terms of appreciation and box office collection. During this phase, John Abraham and Sadia Khateeb starrer The Diplomat turned out to be a pleasant surprise in terms of content. The film also did decently well at the box office.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that The Diplomat could have done better if the makers had done a couple of things differently. “I wish The Diplomat would have been released with more awareness,” said Adarsh. “People were not aware that this film was releasing. And one thing I am fully against is an English title. Why are you keeping an English title? Is there a shortage of Hindi titles?”

Adarsh explained himself further saying, “I am not against English language. But I am against English titles. You are making a film for the Indian audience, which is not just limited to Mumbai. It is outside Mumbai too. So, why aren’t you keeping a Hindi title? By doing this, you have cut out one-third of an audience.”

Citing an old example, he stated, “In the 1970s and 80s, when Hollywood films used to release in smaller centres, they used to write the title in Hindi in brackets, so that people come to see. But our filmmakers don’t understand this. We don’t learn even after failing.”

Adarsh also doesn’t agree with the notion that films like The Diplomat can’t do well in smaller centres. “When people say this film can’t do well in smaller centres, it’s not true. Once the emotions connect, it can do well,” he said.

The Diplomat was directed by Shivam Nair and it was released on March 14.
