A female teacher from a government girls’ school has been booked for allegedly making a student slap her classmates for giving wrong answers, police said on Tuesday.

The case was filed based on a complaint from a 10-year-old student. The police have registered it under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 (cruelty to children).

According to the complaint, the incident happened on Monday afternoon during a Sanskrit lesson. The teacher asked students to recall the meanings of words they had been asked to memorise. The complainant, who is also the class monitor, gave the correct answer, but 10–12 other students couldn’t answer properly. The teacher then instructed her to slap those who failed.

The student said she followed the teacher’s orders but slapped her classmates softly. The teacher, unhappy with this, slapped the complainant and told her to hit the girls harder, saying, “You are the class monitor; you do not even know how to slap.”

The complainant also said two other girls who gave correct answers were slapped too. She expressed that the teacher’s behaviour frightened her. She also mentioned the teacher often says, “You can say whatever you want to your parents; no one can do anything to me.”

The police are now investigating the matter.

About the sections

Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 talks about punishing people who intentionally hurt someone. If a person causes harm on purpose, they can face up to one year in jail, a fine of up to ₹10,000, or both. This rule doesn’t apply to more serious cases covered under Section 122(1).

Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act of 2015 protects children from cruelty. It punishes anyone who hurts, abandons, abuses, neglects, or exposes a child to danger. Depending on how serious the cruelty is, the person could face jail time, a fine, or both. Both laws aim to prevent harm and ensure safety for everyone, especially children.
