In a landscape dominated by young adult campus dramas, Ziddi Girls on Prime Video has emerged as a refreshing take that resonates beyond its intended demographic. While it has all the elements of a classic college drama—friendships, romance, and academic struggles—the show has struck a chord with viewers across generations, from their twenties to their sixties.
Ziddi Girls: Rangita Pritish Nandy explains why Prime Video series is ‘so sticky for people across generations’; says, “College a time of war and first loves”
One of the key factors behind Ziddi Girls’ broad appeal is its ability to evoke nostalgia. For older audiences, it serves as a trip down memory lane, bringing back the highs and lows of their college days. The show’s creator, Rangita Pritish Nandy, explained, “That universal nostalgia about growing up, finding yourself, and finding a voice – that is what’s making Ziddi so sticky for people across generations. College is possibly the most personal, most vulnerable time of our lives – caught between wanting to be counted as grown-ups and actually having to do the work of adulthood. It’s a time of war and first loves.”
Director Shonali Bose echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the show captures a defining phase of life and added, “The formative years of becoming an adult are shaped by college life, especially if it’s in a hostel. You become YOU. And it’s a time no one forgets. Ziddi Girls authentically captures that experience, making people of all generations feel like it’s THEIR story—male or female, young or old.”
Beyond nostalgia, the series also highlights generational dialogue and ideological clashes. Co-writer and co-director Neha Veena Verma shared, “The spirit of dialogue was the start of all our conversations when writing Ziddi Girls—a dialogue between generations and ideologies, between peers, teachers, and parents. In these politically divisive times, the show attempts to connect with people who think differently rather than shutting them down.”
This generational perspective was embedded into the show’s very foundation. Writer and co-director Vasant Nath noted the unexpected reception, saying, “While Gen Z was the focus of Ziddi Girls, the show drew from writers, creators, and directors spanning multiple generations. The alchemy of research and personal experience lent the show the resonance that audiences across age and gender are experiencing.”
Beyond its coming-of-age themes, Ziddi Girls also incorporates political elements, particularly in a storyline where the protagonists challenge a restrictive 7 PM curfew imposed by their college management. This struggle has resonated with older viewers who may have faced similar battles during their own college years.
With its focus on young women asserting their voices and standing up for their beliefs, Ziddi Girls has managed to spark conversations across different generations.
