The mayor of Darbhanga,Bihar, has caused controversy by suggesting a two-hour break in Holi celebrations on March 14, as it falls on a Friday during the holy month of Ramzan. However, after facing strong criticism, especially from the BJP, she expressed regret for her remarks.
On Tuesday, Mayor Anjum Ara said that Holi celebrations should be paused from 12:30 PM to 2 PM because Friday prayers (Jumma) cannot be rescheduled. She also requested that people celebrating Holi stay away from mosques during this time.
The statement came after the district administration held a peace committee meeting earlier this week. Since Holi falls on the same day as Friday prayers during Ramzan, security has been increased in many cities to prevent any tensions.
The mayor’s statement sparked sharp criticism from the BJP. MLA Haribhushan Thakur strongly opposed her suggestion, accusing her of having an extremist mindset.
“There will be no pause in Holi celebrations. The mayor has a Ghazwa-e-Hind mentality, and we are aware of her background. Holi will continue as usual and won’t stop, not even for a minute,” Thakur declared.
BJP leader Haribhushan Thakur strongly opposed the mayor’s proposal, accusing her of having an extremist mindset and trying to impose unnecessary restrictions on Holi celebrations. He firmly stated that there would be no interruptions in the festivities.
“Holi will continue without any breaks. The mayor has a Ghazwa-e-Hind mentality, and we are well aware of her background. There will be no pause, not even for a minute. No one can stop people from celebrating Holi,” Thakur declared.
