West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the accused in the Kolkata trainee doctor murder case will be hanged if needed.
“Firstly, the incident is unfortunate and despicable. It feels like a personal loss to me. Their [doctors] anger and demand is justified. I support it. Police have also accepted their demands. I spoke to the family of the victim and assured them of proper action in this case,” said the chief minister.
She added that the case would be taken over by a fast-track court and the accused would be hanged if needed.
A post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead inside the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday in a semi-nude condition. A preliminary post-mortem revealed that she was sexually assaulted before being murdered. One person has been arrested in connection with the case amid protests by junior doctors of the state-run hospital and criticism from the BJP over law and order.
